There's not a whole lot of difference in dishwashers.

My only word of advice would be to get the fewest options possible. Reason being, the less options you have, the fewer the occurrence of something going wrong!

Because honestly, when it comes to a dishwasher, you just want it to clean the dishes and dry them, right?

The Consumer Reports just did a comparison of appliances in May 2007. It seems that the most reliable dishwashers are Amana & Whirlpool. The Most repair prone are Asko and Fisher & Paykel.

I can attest to the Whirlpool dishwasher being reliable, having a wonderful selection of cycles to both wash and dry and it is an energy saver, too. I can set it to wash during the night when the rates are lower.

If you like to be able to hang out in your kitchen I suggest buying one with a noise rating less than 55 db. We recently remodeled our kitchen and bought a Frigidaire dishwasher with a 52 db noise rating.

It is so nice to be able to start it up with company still there and be able to hang out in the kitchen and not have to raise your voice to be heard. It cleans well and looks good to. See the link below.

I have a Zannussi that I would recommend I would agree with your first answer just get one with the basic amount of settings on it. I think they are quite a basic appliance and nothing much goes wrong with them.
