He may be experiencing hostility towards you because he feels accepting you is being somehow disloyal to his mother. Admittedly, a person can love many people (and will throughout a lifetime) without impacting their feelings for their parents, but this is a heavy concept for a four year old to grasp. What you're experiencing is not at all uncommon, but is annoying until you realize the full scope of what's going on within a developing psyche. The best practice is to remain even-tempered and consistant in all of your dealings with the child and never "appear" to take anything they say personally . Over time this behavior will subside. But if you begin to respond to their slights adversarially, those issues will have lasting repercussions, perhaps for a lifetime.
