I am looking for a "homeade" solution that keeps trees (actually saplings that grew too large to pull out by hand) from continuing growng after cutting them off. And I am not interested in digging 100 of these plants up by the roots.

You're trying to maintain live trees at the current size? No way
without extensive and repeated root pruning.

Or you're trying to kill these the easy way? If so, girdle the stems completely around, taking out the cambium. An inch-wide strip should do it, and a utility knife and a straight screwdriver make a good pair of tools for girdling. Takes me
less than two minutes to girdle a fair size aspen.
