Now they've got something to really play for....torre's job!

I'm not a Yankee fan by any stretch of the imagination but I seriously don't think the problem with the Yanks is Torre. If anything it's Cashman. Cashman was the brain surgeon who brought in Carl Pavano, Randy Johnson, Alex Rodriguez (yes A-Rod, great reg seson, horrible post season), Roger Clemens. Of course it shouldn't come as no suprise that Steinbrenner wants to fire Torre. He has been on the hot seat for a couple of years now. Steinbrenner is also the fire managers after winning the World Series. Jerry Jones of the Cowboys is the other jackass known for firing a coach after winning a ring.

No, I think he was just telling it how it is. He is not the type for motivating people through idle threats or statements, if Torre isn't showing hiim what he wants to see anymore he will be let go. That is why the Yankees stay a powerhouse in baseball pretty much every year. Steinbrenner is devoted to winning, period. He does not mess around with loyalty, and he realizes that with a winning organization comes more income, so he maintains a solid bottom line appraoch that is missing from almost every other team in baseball. He will bring in whoever it takes at whatever cost to win, and if the current structure isn't doing it, nobodies job is safe, including Torre's.
Thats how a real winning team is built.

Steinbrenner doesn't have much to work with in terms of motivators. He's already paying the guy more than any other manager. If they lose this year, it's the 3rd 1st round exit in a row. Steinbrenner can't really say - hey, I'll pay you more if you win (he's already making the most). What else can he do? If you can't win, then I'm not going to pay you more than anyone else in the league -- see ya!

No, I don't think that threat will make the players "better", but if they don't get it together, in every way, Torre may have seen his last season. When you are the highest paid "anybody", you had best provide the best results. Don't think Torre was responsible for the injuries to some of the team members, but then again evreyone has a bad season now and then.

don't buy into that crap.

Steinbrenner's announcement was a stunt to shed blame and take all the credit. If the Yanks lose he will blame it all on Torre. If they win it it because he motivated them.

That's just bull. It implies that if the team loses it is because they want Torre to be fired and that is absolutely absurd. They lost two games because Cleveland got outstanding pitching and swarm of flied attacked their best relief pitcher at a crucial moment.

I hope it was a stunt but Steinbrenner usually doesn't say things that he doesn't mean. It is a real shame because Torre is a good manager.

How is that a stunt? That isnt a stunt. The red sox lost 3 games of the playoffs before we won in 2004, and they said the same thing to our old manager Grady and that wasnt a stunt, they fired him because they lost 3 games of the playoffs, If they dont win 3 games i think the manager of any team gets fired.

i think it was true that he would be gone.. but also gave the team a bigger reason to win, for torres sake. but i personally think that although i am not against torre, if we cant make it past the ALDS then he would be gone. especially because steinbrenner has never kept a manager longer than torre.

Not as much of a stunt as a motivator. The man pays a ton of money and wants to win. And, really, $7 million is a LOT of money for a manager.

It's not a stunt he has a lot of good reasons to fire Torre if they don't win the series.
