I want to run an ethernet through my attic and I think I have a method I can use to do this. My only problem is... where can I buy the cable? I dont ned an extension, just an ethernet plug like you see in a wall. It needs to be pretty long.

ok thanks. One thing though (Im new at this stuff) do you have to use the punchdown tool or can you just buy a complete wire ready to use?

Your local computer retailer probably sell them.

Failing that, you could try your local 'small guy' & ask him to make one of the correct length for you.

(The connectors themselves though are called "RJ45"....if you're looking for them)

Additional comment:

By the punchdown tool, you mean the crimper?

You only need to buy a crimper if you're planning on making the cable yourself (You can't make a cable without one, it's needed for putting the RJ45 onto the end of your CAT-5).

You can certainly buy 'ready-made' lengths though, no problem! (For which you won't need a crimper!)

Web search cat5e cable. You should find plenty of suppliers locally. Many electrical stores now keep it, the only problem is that most of them only supply 300 metre boxes. They can also supply the wall plates and back boxes. You will need an inserter (punchdown) tool, any attempt to connect the cables without this normally damages the connectors beyond repair.

You can buy the cable and the other bits you need at Home Depot or Radio Shack.
You want CAT5 twisted pair.

If there is a Lowes anywhere near you, you could try that. Try places like www.compusa.com and search for rj-45 connectors and cat-5 cable
