So my girlfriend and I had a fight while I was driving my car. I have an 07 model suv and she threw my automatic transmission from Drive into Park while I was going 55mph, because she wanted to get out. The car made a terrible noise and i slammed on the breaks. When I drive it now, there seems to be faint noises coming from the car, but its drivable. How badly damaged could it be and should I take it in to be serviced?

It may not sound terrible now but you should absolutly take in into a transmission repair shop ASAP. Every mile you drive could damage your tranny even more. In case you didnt know, tranny repair can cost thousands $$$.

That was a pretty bad thing to do to a transmission. You better nip it in the butt before it gets worse.

Morale of this story is when driving and you do throw into park, DO NOT APPLY BRAKES. Take it out of park. Drive straight to a transmission specialist. The serious damage took place once the car slowed down enough to allow the park mechanism to engage the spinning gear. OUCH.
Hopefully you will be allowed to see what a transmission looks like on the inside. And if possible how that parking mechanism works.

Yeah, that couldn't have been good on the gears. The flywheel was still spinning from the crank shaft and the energy had no where to go. I would get it checked out asap just to be safe. As for the girl? Find a new one.

DON'T park it on a hill and ALWAYS use your parking brake.

The "park" rod is probably wasted, and there is metal debris in the bottom of the transmission pan.

Take it in while you can still drive it.

IF you can get into P then you'll most likely ruin the parking mechanism and the transmission itself. 1100 dollars

You broke something for sure and it will probably not be covered by any warranty. And your hopefully ex girlfriend needs to pay for all damages she caused by her stupidity.
