You left out one group "Normals".
Liberals equal suedo-Socialism
Conservatives, for the most part, equal freedom of choice but only if its biblical and racially based, which turns into no choice at all.
Normals are people who don't fit into either category. They do what is right for them and their immediate surroundings. We don't need anyone to tell us how to spend our money or that we should feel sorry for poor people (some of us don't).
Normals don't need the government to take care of us, yet we understand there are people in need that need help.
Normals believe in freedom globally but we don't necessarily have to make everyone practice it.
Normals drive the car of our choice and some of them are large SUV's although some choose to drive small cars. But we all buy gas.
And finally, Normals could care less who blew who in the White House as well as if the President can pronuciate words or not as long as he is doing the best he can. Because this is what Normals do... the best we can.

I like using a pie analogy for this question.
A liberal will split up a pie giving each person present an equal piece so that everyone gets the same, despite whether or not they assisted in making the pie.
A conservative will split up the pie based on the individual's contribution to the pie making process, and keep 1 quarter of the pie for themselves to eat at a later date.

Liberials belive all the Natural Resources of the Nation belong to all of it's citizens and if those resources are used then Royalities should be paid to the Government and Regulations to make sure the resources are used in the best possible manner and not wasted.
Liberials also belive in MORE FREEDOMS.
Conservative belive Corporations should be able to use and destroy all our National Resources at will without answering for problems like poisioning streams, the air, or killing people in mine cave in's.
They do not want to pay any royalities or face regulation they want to claim ownership of all the Natural Resources of the USA and that includes labor.
Conservative belive in FEWER FREEDOMS and a controled population.

Judging by the Archie Bunker conservatives vs Mike Stivic liberals on this board, it's obvious that most of them use the same bs rhetoric that's regurgitated over and over again.
So what's the difference? You tell me?

My favorite definitions of the words liberal and conservative appeared in a book called "The Federal Courts, Politics, and the Rule of Law," by John C. Hughes (published 1995):
"In the contemporary political context, those who fear conformity have tended to describe themselves as liberal and have tended to applaud judicial 'protection' of human rights. Those who fear diversity have tended to call themselves conservatives and have been appalled by judicial 'usurpation' of the majority's discretion to form the kind of community it finds most conducive to its own happiness. The former tends to approve of the expansive theories of constitutional interpretation, while the latter tends to prefer the restrained theories of judicial review. These alignments are neither perfect nor inevitable, but the debate has surely been shrill."

I think it mostly comes down to the ultimate function of government. Liberals seem to think that there is no area of life that government can't be called upon to solve a "problem."
Conservatives mostly believe that government causes most "problems."

A liberal wants government to:
1. redistribute wealth
2. take away family-values
3. give freedom in the morally objectionable arena
4. live in the fantasy that we don't need national security
A conservative:
1. family-values minded
2. every individual has an opportunity to pursue wealth and an occupation of his choice
3. values the sanctity of human life at any stage
4. understands that if we don't protect our country, we won't have one to protect

Scientifically speaking liberals are better able to process information based on changing facts...cons on the other hand are stubborn and not as able to comprehend complex situations.
