You can buy them from Parker Brothers Games.
traditionally, they were made of a thin wooden board that was sanded smooth, painted with letters and numbers, and having the words "yes" or "oui" and "NO" or "JA" The pointer or Planchet was made of a heart shaped wooden board that was raised with pegs that have soft felt on them for easy sliding. Also this piece usually has a hole cut into but I have seen them without it.

I assume you know how to use one, and will only warn you to be careful because the human mind is fragile thing. Once broken it's not easily repaired.

The Ouija board was created because the Planchette used for automatic writing was a bit awkward. Two sisters took a piece of flat, thin board and put the letters and numbers on it so they would not have to worry about keeping the pen in the planchette loaded with ink. They removed the pen and made the planchette larger and with an angle markked as a pointer. Where the planchette could only be used by one person, the Ouija planchette could be used by more.

They sold the device to a Toy making company.
