a diamond will scratch a mirror, to tell if somehting is real gold is to put some foundation and face powder on the back of your hand and then rub the gold against it. If a black mark is left behind it is real gold. Real gold creates a chemical reaction with most makeup that fake gold will not.

If it is precious metal there is usually a hallmark on the ring or band. Have a close look at your ring and you should find it.
There is no sure-fire way to guarantee that the diamond is real without taking it to be anaylised. Diamonds to come in differnet grades and it can be hard to tell how good your stone is without help. However, it's possible to get the real thing for $30. If your ring is platimun-clad white gold then I think you have got a bargin. :)

Many jewelers will apprise a ring for only $20.
However, at $30...it most likely isn't a real diamond and why waste $20 on a $30 item?

Is it New or used, as in vintage? I would say at that price and being that it is white gold which is gold with nickel added to create the white and make it a stronger metal, you do not need platinum as a coating, as white gold stays fine without a coating. and a diamond that big is probably a imitation lab created one.
lets see a picture, but i would say you may not have got the exact real thing.
good luck!

Even an expert can't tell by looking at a picture of it. You have to take it to a jeweler for an appraisal.
But for $30? You got yourself a nice cheap ring, nothing more.

No one can tell you from a photo over the internet whether a ring is white gold, or whether the stone is diamond. If you want to know if it is real, take it to a jeweler, or even a pawn shop, and have it checked.

Going to a pawn shop is not a good idea. They are there to make money so even if your ring is valuable they will tell you its worth less so they can buy it and resell it. Go to a reputable Jewelry shop and have it appraised also check the diamonds out for serial numbers etched onto them

You can't appraise a diamond by looking at a picture. You need to take it to a jeweler.

A jeweler can tell you very quickly. But platinum is very expensive, so it's probably a lesser grade of silver.

Most jewelers don't charge much for a quick appraisal. Take it to them. Nobody can tell from a picture.
