Every fall, along with ladybugs they invade the house and scare the crap out of me when they buzz by my ear from out of nowhere! Do they eat other bugs, are they a garden pest, or are they like an appendix and no one really knows........

Most are agricultural pests that drill into plants and take out the juices from there. A few eat plant lice.

If they are in your house annoying you and smelling it up, it does not matter what other purpose they may solve - they are still pests that you should get rid of. Some of them do sting painfully so be careful in handling them.

I heard that they were brought in from Japan to control the population of some other bug/creature since they are poisonous to eat.
