Right now we have to farm out factory work to other countries to make products cheap so people will buy our products. Now the Government realizes we need to have illegal immergrants working the farms to make that profitable. Slavery would not be pc but hey, what do you think our guest workers are doing

Ok so I guess what we should do is allow guest workers, pay them less then minimum wage and when harvest season is over send them back? Or should we make farms, (not picking on just farms, so please) pay all workers minimum wage, raise the price of food, then increase benefits for Food Stamps and effectivley raise taxes and keep up the fight against illegals in our country?

Guest workers are not quite slaves because they get to go home when they finish their contract, but the are less than indentured servants because the cannot earn citizenship under the proposed program. I find the idea of importing temporary labor morally objectionable. We should either let them become citizens or be willing to pay the increased prices that would cover the costs of hiring citizens to do the labor. The argument that there is work that we won't do contradicts basic economic theory. The supply curve slopes up, and the demand curve slopes down, and there is an equilibrium wage for labor on farms, just as there is for any other kind of labor. A guest worker program is an attempt to shift the supply curve for labor on farms and in certain other industries and distorts the labor markets. The number of college students who major in technical subjects has fallen as a reaction to the lowering of wages in many fields due to guest worker programs for high tech industries.

Oh man this is a great question....I can't wait to see some of the responses because you used the term "slavery" in the question....

Here's my thoughts on it....

Slavery, by definition would be acquiring and retaining persons against their will for the purpose of using them for monetary or tangible gains without monetary reciprocation...

I think we are seeing that, even though business owners can make a killing off of utilizing illegal immigrants because they only have to pay then a nickel a day for a salary, but the losses they incur due to theft is STAGGERING....

This practice is a double edged sword...yeah you get ultra cheap labor, but you stand to lose a lot more from disgruntled employees that figure out that they are being taken advantage of....not to mention the poor quality of work you'll get from angry, manipulated workers.

To answer your question though....even though mankind is still very barbaric in many of their practices in the modern age....I believe that slavery is one practice that will remain something read about in history books.....for the same reason why a military draft is most likely something that Americans will never see again....

You stand to gain MUCH more by having a work force that WANTS to be there....rather than one that is FORCED to be there.
