Bush had a personal vendetta against Saddam. The republicans didn't want to appear not to be supporting the president and democrats didn't want to look weak on defense with an election coming up. And of course Bush, thinks that God told him too, let's not forget that important point.

The reasons given were:
Failure to comply with 12 UN resolutions demanding that Iraq allow the UN inspectors back in or face serious consequences. Days before the war we upped this to Saddam and his sons leaving Iraq. Remember, every intelligence agency in the world that had an opinion on the matter and the UN, believed that Saddam had rebuilt his WMD stockpile. They had very good reason. When we went in the first time we found he was a year away from having nukes. There is a ton of bumper sticker nonsense out there about GWB and the war in Iraq, it all falls apart under scrutiny.
Human rights violations. This was actually one of the reasons given most often but is ignored by the left today.
When the other side says moronic things like "oil", just ask them to explain how we profited from the oil. They won't have an answer because we didn't.
Those idiots who say it was for 9/11 don't know their history. The administration never made any connections with 9/11.

I'll tell you what I really think. This is just one case you could make.
1. Bush wanted American oil companies to have control of Iraqi oil. We didn't need that oil, at least not right away, but having control over it puts us in a good position. The price of oil will rise a lot in the next few years because there will be less and less of it, but more and more demand for it, especialy in India and China where more people are using more energy than ever before. So whoever 'owns' it will do very well.
2. Being a 'war president' gives President Bush certain advantages. He can ignore the constitutional limits on his powers as president and say that he's doing it because it's an emergency. This means breaching international treaties, ignorning international law, snooping on Americans without warrants, arresting people without probable cause and keeping them in prison indefinitely without even bringing charges against them, etc. etc.
3. It also allows him to to claim that anyone who disagrees with him or criticizes him is unamerican or treasonous.
4. It also allows him to shovel taxpayer money to his friends. Halliburton and Blackwater, for instance, have gotten big non-competitive contracts, have wasted billions and billions in fraud and graft, and we have no way to hold them accountable. Literally tens of billions of dollars have disappeared this way, in fact something like 30% of the arms we sent to Iraq have disappeared, sold on the black market to our enemies!
5. The massive debt from the war, and the big, sudden increase in fuel prices, will cause a recession. Of course this will happen after Bush is out of office. It will have the effect of further concentrating wealth in the US, making Bush's friends and associates that much richer. And the recession--inflation and unemployment--can be blamed on the next president, who will undoubtedly be a Democrat.
(This is exactly what happened after the Vietnam War. Nixon was elected in 1968 on a promise to end the war but he kept it going for another 4 years. After Nixon left office, we had a sudden rise in gas prices, double-digit inflation and high unemployment. This was all blamed on Jimmy Carter, the next president, who happened to be a Democrat.)

To protect the Saudi's from Ossama Ben Lowdown.
He fought with the Saudi Royal Family about the USA being allowed to put thier army near their holy places.
The U.S. Military is the Saudi's "WHITE SLAVES" as they call us.
The Saudi's fear the People of the Middle East will start looking at them and how they spend that great wealth while so many are hungery and need water.
The Saudi's make a fortune selling weapons in the middle east.

well considering that all the reasons that the admin offered in the beginning (saddam building nucs biological weapons, WMDs, ties to al qaeda and 9/11), turned out to be wrong and false, all i can say is that we went there for the oil. now the admin is saying we have to "free the people of iraq". well, not saying that i liked saddam, but atleast in his time people were living much better lives and the country was prospering. that is not to say that he didnt kill civilians, but atleast no american lives were being lost. so as of right now, there is no plausible or beliveable reason why we went to iraq. good luck with finding anything!!!

Bush originally went in Iraq to kill Saddam as he had W.M.D.S that could destroy homeland America. Also for revenge of 911,he said the terrorist where working for Saddam. With all the death Bush has caused I will not say it was for oil,,,get someone else to disrespect the dead,,not me.to me the illusion of a riotous war to prevent W.M.D.S from destroying homeland America is enough as well as revenge for 911...chow freepress

HAHA! Sucks to be in your position...
Well, basically we went because of false intelligence. It said that Saddam had WMD's, so George hopped all over that oppurtunity. Unfortunately instead of sending all our troops to Afghanistan, we went to Iraq. Now we are out 3000+ troops, billions of dollars, and still no sign of Osama.
Good luck in your debate! You're gonna need it!

lies, non-existent WMD's, non-existent mobile bio-weapons labs, and non-existent Mushroom clouds, and a pile of manure that was spread at the UN by Colin Powell.
And a media that wouldn't report the truth.
That's why were in Iraq.
