I have an 06 and have transmission problems since about 600 miles, currently I have a little over 16,000 miles and its going to the shop tomorrow for repairs on the transmission again (3rd time). So avoid the standard transmissions. I had a 1989 Mazda B2600i pickup with over 220,000 miles on it and it was more reliable than the cobalt. Stupid me I traded the truck for a new car with 11 miles on it and have the results of driving my 96 jeep more often than the new car due to the tranny problems.
Overall they don't have much room in the back seat.
The trunk opening is too small. The trunk is large but you can't get bulky items to fit in the trunk. The back seats fold down but that don't help with the trunk opening size.
I average 33mpg with a mix of city and highway driving. With the 2.2L I4 engine. LS model. No power windows, locks, or mirrors. Also no cruise control, which I regret not getting now.

Remember seen a TV camerical where the Calviler went head to head with Toyota Carolla and the Chevy's theme was
" WE WILL BE THERE!"
2 guys ran to get into there car 1 guy in a carolla 2 guy in the Chevy and the Chevy started up and took off while the Toyota had to crank the motor twice or more times to get it started.
Chevy's Message was that there car is just as reliable if not more than Toyota and will get you on your way faster.
It Gets you on your way faster.
Colbalt is better than the Cavalier was.
new Eco-tec engines are very reliable.

The Cobalt is a very reliable car and for the price tag, not a bad deal. The Cobalt replaced the Cavalier (Thank God) and it has some nice horsepower. (173 for the 2.4L and 205 for the 2.0L Supercharged SS).

I am kind of mixed with whether I like it. Here's why:
Cons:
-Low to the ground, bad when trying to turn left and the jerk with the SUV next to you won' t move outta the way so you can see.
-Major Blind Spots! Can be hazardous!
-I have an 05 model and they had to replace a TON of wires in it to make the Airbag go off like it should.
-Had MAJOR problems with the stereo system always locking up. Had to go get that fixed a few times.
-Had to have sensors replaced because the ABS Brake Light kept going off for no reason. Really Scared me.
-TEENY back seat. I feel sorry for whoever has to sit back there!
-Trunk is ample but the opening is hard to get boxes into. Although Great for groceries!
-Stock tires need to be replaced almost immediately because they are only rated to 10,000 miles
-Lots of Road Noise!
-Only thing power on mine is the the Locks, kinda sucks!
Pros:
-Good on gas!
-I just hit 31,000 miles and it hasn't failed me yet.
-Has Get up and go on the E-way
-Great manuvarability (sp?) I can get that thing outta any space!
-Handles good, you don't have to muscle it.
-Looks like an M&M and it's cute!
-Warms up or Cools down QUITE fast! Which is very nice in the Cold Michigan winter's I experience!
-Nice Stereo system! If you have it up loud, your mirror shakes! ;)
Overall, go test drive it yourself. If you like the features it comes with, then go for it. I would go to different dealerships and test drive it a couple of times just so that you can get the hang of it. Or if you know anyone with a Cobalt, ask them to borrow it for errands because you want to see how it handles and so on! Give your friend a new tank of gas and I am sure that they will appreciate your kindness. If you see people at the gas station, ask them how they like theirs. Also, You want to compare the things that you like about your current car to the dislikes and tell the salesperson about what you like about your car and what you would like in a new car and ask them to tailor their selection to you! If you get a good salesperson they will have no problems with this and will be happy to help. Good Luck!....oh, and ask a TON of questions!
