I hate having this big computer desk in my living room. I really do not use the computer for other than interneting and playing online games. Not into creating or burning anything. I do however load pics from the digital.

In regards to a laptop, don't require the portability, so that is not an issue, I just would sit in on the couch with it.
My question is, I have high speed internet (roadrunner). I would have to keep the laptop close to that for the connection but that is not an issue as the desktop is stationary anyway.

What about batteries or does it run off electric also? I do have a printer, scanner that I do use on occasion, but could hook that up as needed and store it on a shelf if I am not using it.

I am completely computer stupid, so any advise or words of wisdom would be appreciated.

EVEREX XT5000T Value priced 17" Gaming notebook with 256VRAM $699
Awesome graphics. Great speed (although I did upgrade to 2GB ram) Format Vista and put XP on it and watch it fly.Best deal for your money. I think you would be hard pressed to find a laptop with these specs for less. The keyboard layout is different but not something that takes forever to get used to I am already used to it.

I have a rig here at home that puts my main system in the back of the house. It has the printer connected to it. I have my broadband connection tied to a wireless router that can be seen all over the house. I take my laptop to my comfortable chair and plug it into the AC--the batteries only last for a couple of hours at best. It has a wireless connection so I can see the Internet and I have shared the printer on my base system so other computers can use it. I would also keep your scanner connected to your existing computer and use it as your base system. It can be anywhere. There are simple ways you can configure it so you don't even need a monitor... (terminal services).

I have many of both types. For the home user nothing beats a laptop. They cost more but are really worth the difference.
A good one will cost about $2000.
You can work every thing wireless, printer included. Battery last about two hours.
Get 200 GB hard drive. 2 GB RAM. 7000 +rpm. High resolution screen. You do not need to hook-up to your desktop. Buy a router, I suggest Linksys. They have an 800# you can call and they will instruct you on the setup. My last suggestion is to call HP, tell them what you need and want, and have them build you one. Takes about two weeks for delivery. Get Vista Premium plus Microsoft office student/teacher already installed. Always better to over buy than under buy as technology advances so quickly. Find you a computer Nerd for more ideas.

The only difference for you between a desktop and laptop is the size.
Yes, you would need to keep it plugged in or the battery will die. You can hook up your printer, probably has a USB cable (the rectangle connector) and be connected to the internet the same way your desktop was connected.
