Names here are much of a cultural thing , depending on the family heritage. My family have been it the Americas from the 16 hundreds on my European side and thousands of years on my Native American side, I am Philip Douglas three rivers Nell.
We were Scotch Irish. Philip was a Biblical name Nell from Neale and Oneal.
Three Rivers is my Native name.
Spanish descendants usually have Biblical names like Jesus, Angel, Israel, Rafael, etc. this was due to the catholic influence.
Lately American Blacks have taken Muslim names. basically in the last 30 years.
common "American names " Bill , Joseph, Peter John, Mary, Annette , Jane , Susan, Cynthia etc.
Give me an example of weird name? I understand in England Shirley and Joyce can be mens names. Not here.
What's odd depends what side of the ocean you're on.
You will find in the US the same names you find all over the world. China is a big exception. They usually change their first names when they come here. I knew a girl named Helen. I asked her what her Chinese name was. She told me , I couldn't pronounce it.
What is an American name? It's every name in the world.

I named my son Aidan, an old gaelic name, because i didn't want him to have some boring, popular name like Michael or David. I just wanted something different. Of course, 10 years later, everyone seems to be in the mood to name their son Aidan. Disappointing for me at best...

It's not just males anymore. Parents everywhere are naming their kids (boys AND girls) after inanimate objects, quit-smoking programs, and diseases.
Trust me. I know a girl named Nicorette.

First of all - odd is quite subjective.
Second - Americans have no monopoly on 'odd' names.
Third - some parents shouldn't have kids

people think they're being creative and imaginative when they give their son a first name like "merick" or their daughter one like "courtney" but spelled "kortnii" or something but they're really just condemning them to a life of "how do you pronounce your name?" and "how do you spell that?"
