to be on the safe side I would disconnect it as when you charge a battery you are reversing the flow in the battery to re-energise the acid in the battery.

For your safety and your home and auto take it out and away from your vehicle outside your garage and set it up on the charger and charge it. The one time it may go wrong and detonate from the hydrogen gas that is generated while charging will do way more damage than you can imagine. Not worth the risk to you and everything around you. By moving it out you can clean the terminals, connections and inspect and clean the battery tray etc. Remember it is full of sulfuric acid! Probably would never happen to you but play it safe. Really is 8 minutes of work really worth a possible fire, explosion or permanent eye and skin damage?

Disconnecting at least one battery cable (the negative black cable is best to disconnect for safety) is a sure fire way to protect your car's sensitive electronics from electrical transients generated by the battery charger which may be defective or fail at any time. It's easy to do and you need to clean the battery terminals anyways with the wire brush below. Why take a chance of damaging your car's electrical system? You may ask then how it is that car's are jump started all the time with no concern for damaging either car. My answer is that damages can occur during jump starting and the preferred way to charge a battery is by using a battery charger as described here. Auto alternators are not designed to charge deeply discharged batteries which often occurs on a jump start.

No.
I never do.
How is it going to hurt anything if it's hooked up?

That's like asking if you need to disconnect your battery when you park your car....

No you do not. As long as the car is not running while you are trying to charge it, it dosen't matter.
