My experiences have been that the OS doesn't copy over to the new drive very well at all, and to the last of my knowledge it isn't even recommended to do it.

Some other programs don't copy over very well also. e.g. Norton Systemworks, McAfee, etc.

My recommendation is to install the new hard drive as the Master drive and your current hard drive as the slave.

Turn the pc on and put the OS disk in the drive and then reboot the pc. The os should boot from the CD so you can install it on your new drive. Then reinstall Major programs such as Norton/McAfee, etc and copy over whatever other items you desire also.

I feel it's KEY to get a good clean install of the OS. If in copying over everything doesn't transfer cleanly you're going to have headaches later on.

Hope this helps.

If you copy the raw partition, then you shouldn't have a problem on anything like Windows XP or older operating systems (Vista may complain about the volume ID changing).

Partition Magic is an excellent option. If you want to try something free, give Partition Mananger a try ( http://www.brothersoft.com/file_disk_management/miscellaneous/partition_manager_4272.html )
