Most people do acknowledge the difference. I do not acknowledge someone as African American unless they are African immigrants to the U.S. As a genealogist, I recognize there are many black Americans that do not descend from Africans (I'm not referring to 10,000 years ago, but the land they came from before coming to the U.S.), and I also recognize that many wrongly assume they are of African descent. In regards to modern-day cultures, I work with enough African-born and non-African born black folks to appreciate their cultural differences also, both in regards to varying cultures within Africa (across different regions, countries, religions, etc.) and outside of that continent. (Primary job is international logistics, but have had a genealogical and historical research service for about ten years.)
I must admit I've wondered the same thing about black people. In general conversation, it seems most I've talked to put all white people into the descendants of rich English box. Do you feel that generally, or even just for yourself, that black folks acknowledge and appreciate the differences of varying European cultures and histories?

Yes. This is why I do not like the term African American. It clumps too many diverse people together, even some who are not even from America at times. I guess I am considered white. But then again to some I am not white, I am Jewish. Or am I a European American? You see my point, labels of any type serve no purpose and I like to ignore them.

I do not accept the way the term African-American is used.
Africa is a continent NOT a counrty
Either you are a citizen of the US or you are not.
My Great Grand father was born in Poland
When he came to the US he became US citizen
NOT a Polish-American
UNLESS YOU WERE BORN IN AFRICA
AND THEN BECOME A U.S. CITIZEN YOU ARE NOT AFRICAN-AMERICAN
Is someone from Bazil a "South American-American"?
Or Are Canadians who come to the U.S.
Nortn American-Americans?

That's a very interesting question. Certain cultures I can tell the difference. The other day may son and his friend (both 11) and I were driving and I was trying to explain a kid in their class and I said" the black boy." My son's friend said, " you know, that they are referred to as African American." What is politically correct if you don"t know where they are from?

No, just what I assume them to be. It's way too complicated to try to find out everyone's origins. Just like your question starts, "White people...", I am English, Irish, Native American, and Scandinavian (that I know of-maybe more). I certainly wouldn't want to go through that spiel with everyone--could they even remember all of it anyway? I guess the best way I would like to be described (for convenience's sake) is White, or European-American.......well, European-American is just silly. Call me White, I suppose.

Alot of people only think of France and England when speaking of Europe....it's the same thing (the predominant culture will "over-ride" the sub-culture in terms of recognition)

It seems to me that most if not all of them are humans. Sorry but there is an extremely small chance that some humans could be aliens but it is highly unlikely.
Not sure what color has to do with humans though. I understand that often green fruit isn't ripe, but humans are just humans.

I used to get really confused until I got with my now mixed race partner.
Generally I can guess now but still get it wrong a lot.
I think it is good to learn where people originate from.

We're usually not allowed to comment on the differences between races unless we're complementing the minority race.
