There r a lot of variables on that question.
Lets say it is a pole with a shadow of 12 feet. Then lets say that it is at the same time. That would mean that the pole is simply 4 times larger, so
8x4= 32 feet tall.
But if its a different time, or it says the width of the tree at the top, then this is wrong. This is the best i can help u.

8/x = 3/12
8 * 12/3 = x
x = 32
Tree would be 32 feet tall

Think of it as a ratio.
8/3 = x/12
3 * 4 = 12.
Therefore 8 * 4 = x
x = 32 ft.

tan θ = 8 / 3
let height of tree = h
tan θ = h / 12
h = 12 tan θ
h = 12 x 8 / 3
h = 32 ft
OR
8/3 = h/12
h = 96/3
h = 32 ft
