They were able to build a strong library of games before the other two next-gen systems even launched. They were able to build a strong marketing campaign that includes having ONLY their logo on TV commercials for games that are available for multiple systems.
Remember though, rushing the system out early also resulted in the biggest video game tech malfunction problem of all time....the Red Ring of Death.

well, the early launch date benefitted the xbox 360 in many ways:
1. it was the only 7th genereation console out for a year.
2. it gave microsoft a year to fix all the bugs and make it better.
3. many more games were released on the xbox 360 in that time.
4. it had no competitors and didn't need any price cuts.
5. it was the only console to buy, even if it was overheating and broke constantly.
6. it wasn't overpriced, unlike the ps3, so it was still selling better than the ps3 when it came out.
*you can use what I wrote in your report, because I really don't care about all that plagiarism nonsense.

Some would argue that it hasn't;
1. the Wii has already overtaken it in terms of sales.
2. possibly rushing the console out has lead to RROD which has not only cost money in terms of replacing damaged consoles, but also giving the company bad publicity.
3. Outside the US, it hasn't got a big enough lead to dominate the PS3. (In Japan the PS3 took the lead it had away in a matter of months and across europe and the rest of the world it doesn't have any real lead.)
To be honest, here in the UK, Sonys bad PR has probably helped the 360 more than anything Microsoft has done.

- they were able to attract gamers about next gen before wii or ps3 came out
- gaming companies made contracts with the xbox ppl prior to the release of wii and ps3 which is why they have tons of great games out now compared to the wii and ps3
- xbox has bragging rights about how they sold the most units in the console war so far
