In October 1970, the NHL adopted the home team to wear white uniforms because that was the norm in other sports.
In October 2003, the NHL switched to dark uniforms at home because that is what the fans wanted.
George McPhee of Washington tabled a request to have the teams switch back starting this year because laundry costs were prohibitive. He was outvoted.

Also look at some old hockey pictures or footage from the 70s or earlier and you will see that the home team used to wear the dark sweater. As an example look at the famous picture of Bobby Orr diving through to air after scoring a goal in the Stanley Cup.

i no the reason why they changed the colors is because most teams alternate jeresys are dark colored and most teams want to wear them at home so they changed it so they could. i no before the sabres got new jeresys their alternate ones were red with swords and their vintage where the old school ones and they werent really able to wear them at home and i believe that the rule was activated umm a year or 2 before the lock out

In most sports, the home team decides which jersey they wear. In the outdoor summer sports there is an advantage to wearing the white jersey due to the heat. In situations where there isn't an advantage you traditionally make the opponant wear white. Because, "You can't wear you color in our house." Hockey was the last one to get the memo.

They changed it so every home team doesn't always have the same color jersey. It changed after the lockout.

It was the year before the lockout and it was supposed to spruce things up a bit; change of scenery, if you will. I hated it at first, but I've finally started getting used to it last year.
