i paid over 700 to have my brakes fixed at Midas and i want to know if i was screwed over. i had to replace the rear pads and rotors and the rear driverside caliper. i know that parts arent that expensive, they used the cheapest ones, or so they say. it just seems to me like i paid WAY TOO MUCH to have just about two hours worth of work done.

Sorry (Ford Man) but I disagree.

I figure the rear rotors are those special kind with the parking brakes inside them and they are pretty pricy.
There's $200

Brake pads. $60.
Inner brake shoes (parking)$70
Caliper $140

Labor: Replace parts (rotors, park brake shoes 1 caliper), adjust park brake shoes, bleed entire system. 2hrs.@$110

plust tax

It adds up about right......

Yes you certainly were taken for a ride at Midas. Most of these organizations will and do rip off consumers....especially if they do not understand or know better (Sorry but females are taken more than males at these places....they play on your lack of knowledge). Many of their mechanics get bonuses based on what they CAN sell to you...managers salary are tied to that also. It is all tied into their performance evaluations. You could certainly shop around and get estimates for the cost of doing that work elsewhere and take it back to the manager if they are way out of line and complain. I have seen many, including my wife's best friend, get and almost get taken. They wanted to charge her $998.99 for the brakes on the rear of her Mustang GT. I reinspected them called the manager and the mechanic was fired...he had said everything needed done when only pads and rotors were necessary...Everything else was immaculate underneath. I have yet to see any Midas or Brakes Plus etc that has any scruples or morals period. Next time get an itemized estimate and then go to Autozone, buy the parts yourself and take them to an area ASE certified mechanic and have him/her do the work. You'll save a ton. Businesses usually mark parts up a minimum of 20 to 30% if you buy it through them so you paid X$ for pads and rotors than cost 30% less if you bought them. Just FYI.

Compare costs: Rockauto online
Rear Hardware Kit: $5.44
Raybestos Pads Rear: $38.79 set
Raybestos Rotor: $29.79 each
A-1 Cardone Remanufactured Caliper: $45.79 each
plus shipping and you still would come out on top by 100's

Now add that up and figure no more than 2 hours of labor.($120-150).I know NO mechanic that can't do this in 2 hours unless he/she is screwing around. You do NOT have to replace calipers in pairs as long as the other caliper and its piston/seal is not experiencing any seal leakage, has not been damaged etc. Would advise that a new hardware kit be installed on the other caliper to ensure that your sliders are working properly though and provide even brake wear. For about another $50 to $75 you could get a 2 year warranty rotor if you had wished to.

FIRST OFF WAS THIS VEHICLE UNDER WARRANTY????

SECOND USING QUALITY NAME BRAND PARTS.

REAR ROTORS: $103.65 EACH RETAIL
REAR PADS: $42.60 RETAIL
REAR CALIPER: $147.34 RETAIL
LABOR: $220.00
MISC SUPPLIES: $20.00

TOTAL W/O TAX: $637.24

YOU DO UNDERSTAND THAT WHEN ONE CALIPER IS BAD OR LOCKING UP YOU SHOULD ALWAYS REPLACE THEM IN PAIRS. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH ALL FORDS THAT ARE MADE.

I WOULD ASK THEM FOR THE OLD REAR ROTORS AND HAVE THEM MEASURED JUST TO SEE IF THEY WERE OUT OF SPECS TO THE POINT THAT THEY COULD NOT BE MACHINED.

I WOULD ALSO CONTACT THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY’S CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT AS WELL.

THIS IS VERY COMMON AND I ALWAYS SAY....

TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.

THEY ARE PAID OFF COMMISSION SO IT IS THEIR JOB TO TALK YOU INTO AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND THE SAD THING IS FIRST, YOU DON'T NEED 90% OF THE STUFF THAT THEY SAY AND SECOND, THEY ARE THE WORSE REPAIR SHOPS AROUND.

THEY ONLY HAVE PARTS RE-PLACERS THEY DO NOT HAVE QUALIFIED TECHNICIANS BUT THEY DO HAVE THEIR CERTIFICATES ON THE WALLS TO SAY THAT THEY ARE.

ANYONE CAN BECOME CERTIFIED BUT VERY FEW NOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND IN MY BUSINESS THESE SHOPS ALWAYS SEND THEY SCREWS UPS TO US TO REPAIR.

CONTACT THE CORPORATE OFFICE AND FILE A COMPLAINT, DON’T FILE WITH THE BBB BECAUSE THEY ARE A JOKE AS WELL.

BE VERY CALM AND STATE YOUR CASE, BE PERSISTENT BUT BE ON POINT AND THIS DOES WORK IN SOME CASES.

YOU CAN ALSO FILE WITH YOUR LOCAL ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE AND I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THEY HAVE A VERY LARGE FILE ON THEM.

GOOD LUCK AND REMEMBER THERE ARE A LOT OF GOOD INDEPENDENT SHOPS OUT THERE THAT TREAT THE CUSTOMER LIKE A PERSON AND NO JUST LIKE A NUMBER.

yea you got ripped off big time sheesh i could have that job done in 30 minutes, 2 hours what are they dumb. even if we said that each part cost a hundred dollars which they dont. ( i'd say 30 for pads 80 for rotor and 100ish for caliper) that would be 300 dollars for them which means they charged you 300 dollars for 2 hours of service which means you got ripped off especially for minor repairs they normally should be charging you maybe 90 an hour if you get a deal. but even then it shouldnt take them dumbos 2 hours thats pathetic

hope that helped, sorry about the crude sentences and math

I did exactly the same job today at a Toyota dealership on an 06. No separate parking brake shoes btw. It was for an employee so slightly discounted parts....it was just under 300. 700 bucks is a farce

That price does not sound terribly excessive for the amount of work you had done.
