My boyfriend had to go to the hospital yesterday. I was not with him so I am very confused at what is going on. The doctor had to cut him open just below his tailbone. There was an absess? There was so much build up that it basically came out on its own. BUT the doctor told him that he might have something where you get an infection in your bowels and it burrows its way out into the body? My BF was out of it while he was explaining it so he couldn't really tell me what was going on when he came home. Only that he had to return to the doctor on Tuesday morning. Does anybody know what the heck is wrong with him? It was hurting him so badly that he couldn't even sit down. He barely could walk and just trying to help him get up off the bed was painful.

This is a condition called pilonidal cyst. I developed the same condition when I was a teenager. My doctor told me that it is an ingrown hair that usually starts in-vitro. It just grows throughout your life and is not a concern until you disturb it. I think I disturbed it by wearing tight jeans in high school. My doctor told me that in the old days it used to be referred to as "jeeps disease" because it was only found in men in the army who rode around in bumpy jeeps (therefore disturbing it). He said that surgery is possible but very intricate because the ingrown hair could be very long by now. Those who do surgery often have to go back for additional removal.

I did not opt for surgery. It began to hurt again from time to time but never swelled up like it did that first time. It has been 23 years since I was first bothered by it and it has never caused me any problems what so ever.

It sounds like a Pilonidal Cyst. It is an abcess that can occur in mostly males from youth to about 40. It is a Staphylococcal infection that can become serious if not treated quickly.

I can understand why your BF was hurting so much.

sounds just like an abcess or a cyst. after they drain it and maybe pack it until the inside heals, or just remove the sack, he will be fine. as for the infection going inward, i would say he waited to long to go to the doc in the first place. the doc may have been telling him what could have happened if left untreated. goodluck.
