Since Titanic there has been so much talk about blue diamonds that I thought I would ask. :)

A diamond is composed of pure carbon. Blue diamonds contain the inclusion of another element (boron, I think) that alters the color.

Sapphires are any non-red variety of aluminum oxide (Al2O3), or corundum.

A blue diamond is made of carbon with an impurity that imparts a blue tinge. A sapphire is a crystal of corundum. Sapphires can be any colour but are generally blue. When corundum is red it is called a ruby. Artificial sapphire (colourless) can be grown, polished and used for expensive watch glass, as it is the second hardest substance after diamond.

If you take it to a jeweler, ask them to carbon test it. They have these little things that look like a pen, and when it is touched to a genuine diamond, it buzzes. Diamonds are more expensive than sapphires. But Sapphires are blue. If it IS real, I'd suggest you get it appraised by three different jewelers, and have it insured.

Well....

Diamonds are made from Carbon - And Sapphires from Aluminium (with traces of Titanium that give the blue colour).. If you get a sapphire that's infused with Chromium rather than Titanium - It's a Ruby

Although both gems can come in a massive range of colours from clear to brown.. And you can also change the colour of sapphires by heating them up/

Most likely what you have is really a CZ. Diamonds do not crack, they are the hardest substance known to man and sapphire is the next hardest. So a real diamond even if poor clarity would not crack. That is why jewelers use a diamond to cut a diamond because nothing else can.

Diamonds are made out of carbon and sapphires are made of aluminum oxide. Also, the colors of each would probably vary, not to mention their makeup is entirely different.
