I didn't know it was asked before.

Yeah, I know. Having Britney and Led Zeppelin fans in the same category just freaks me off. It pisses me off too.

Shouldn't rap, hip-hop and pop be in the same section since they have more things in common?

It's tradition from a lot of record stores. They always have a Rock/Pop section, which today is being called "popular." Though that makes little sense since hip/hop and rap are very popular, but can be found in their own section. Same with country.
It all has to do with the cost of doing business (shelf space, sign printing, etc.)

I also wish "world" had it's own section.

I understand,it's like people will be discussing favourite songs (presumably rock) and then someone states a pop song and will get thumbs down,as someone may disagree that it doesn't fit in with the subject,when deciding Yahoo must have thought that pop is closer to Rock than Hip Hop also if you post a 'pop' question here then maybe it will be more likely for someone to know then answer whereas pop is a kind of different Genre to rap especially if the pop music is mainstream.

This question has been asked 4 or 5 times over the last week.

It seems to be because a lot of people {even record stores} can't tell wich bands / artists are Rock, and which are Pop.

It needs to be changed so that Pop has its own section, and Rock is broken down into :~

Classic Rock {1960's ~ 1970's}
Prog Rock
80's Rock
Modern Rock {post 1990}
Alternative Rock {for those who aren't quite rock}

But we also need sections for :~

Celtic
Folk
World
New Age

I hate finding all those mixed in with all sorts in 'Other Music'.

I don't understand why this really matters. Just like the first post said, a fraction of the questions asked in this section are pop-related.

And even though I loathe the more recent pop music, I listen to both. I have referenced both in answers I have given.

If someone posts something that you are not interested in, don't answer it. It's that simple.

They do exacly the same thing in HMV.

Personally, I don't want to have to trawl through questions about Rhianna, or the Pussycat dolls, when I'm trying to find some metal!

I guess they're more similar than, say pop and opera, or rock and hiphop.

But I agree, it does seem a little strange.

No idea. Can you imagine having Led Zeppelin fans and Britney Spears fans in the same category?!

Pop is just popular music, if you use the literal meaning it includes most modern rock and some metal.

Alot of suposed Rock bands get labelled Pop unwillingly.
Even though they sound nothing alike.

For some reason they always put those two together. Which is kind of annoying bc to me they are two totally different types of music.
