I suppose that Wes is joking when he says Columbus was English, he was an Italian (although Italy didn't exist as a country at the time) but he undertook his voyage in order of the Spanish king. He was the one who discovered the Americas for the Europeans at that time, of course the Norse had been in New Foundland and Greenland before, but there was hardly knowledge about that outside of Scandinavia. Also there were no maps left.

So for Europe this discovery was very important, and since most people living in the Americas nowadays are from European descent it is celebrated there. The native Americans who came thousands of years earlier by passing the Bering street may see it as a bad thing, and maybe it is, but had America not been discovered the world would look very different today.

So we've a acceptance to place to the form. That on my own is robust adequate to declare a holiday, Columbus Day.

Well it was to honor the incredible hardships that Columbus had to endure both to reach this country and in supporting his hypothesis that the earth was round.

Unfortunately, the vikings and potentially others had beat him here and others had proposed a spherical earth.
