You know how us youngin's are not going to get social security? Then wtf, should we still get taxes taken out or our checks? I'm sick of helping welfare and drug addicts and baby boomers. It truly isn't fair. Why doesn't someone go against this or petition against it? Who's with me?

My mom who is at her age, feels the same way, she says all her old people should die LOL, no but seriously, people who keep having babies for no reason, should mandatorily get neutered. But you do have to save your own money, which I am already. Thanks all! I'm not hating on older people either, we're all going to become that age too and I'm really worried about how to live at that age. It saddens me to see some of my loved ones struggling with jobs and such.....so do plan.

Social security is different. Most of those people are simply old and CAN'T work. Many would if they could. I feel senior citizens are entitled to retirement and enjoying the end of their lives, however long that may be, in the comfort of having money to take care of themselves. Most retirees aren't drug addicts or freeloaders, they've done their time working. You won't get social security changed, you'd create too many impoverished senior citizens. If the system falls apart and dies, then it does. I'm saving for my own retirement, I don't expect SS to be waiting for me.

Actually, Social Security taxes were raised in 1983 when Reagan was president, in order to make the system sound during the retirement of the Baby Boom Generation. -Prior to the 1983 reforms, the system was pay -as - you go. - What came in from younger workers was immediately paid out in benefits. But as a result of the 1983 reforms, for most people SS taxes were gradually raised by about 1/3 - and for the self employed they almost doubled. - Since then, the system has been running a big surplus. As a result, the baby boom generation, became the first generation to pay for their parents' retirement as well as their own.

In order for the 1983 reforms to work, congress would have had to be responsible and kept the rest of the budget balanced or nearly balanced. Ideally the surplus being paid into Social Security would be used to buy up government bonds from countries like China. (When Reagan was running for president, he promised to get the budget balanced by 1983). -The problem of course, is that congress has been borrowing and spending the surplus as fast as it comes in and congress has no plan in place to pay it back when it is needed to pay benefits. Politicians of both parties have tried to convince the public that the problem is with Social Security rather than the rest of the government, so that they can have an excuse to cut benefits, and avoid paying back the loans.

The borrowing form the Social Security Trust fund has masked the true size of the deficit and made it easier to cut income taxes for the wealthy. President Bush has said that the Federal Budget will be briefly balanced in 2012 - but what he is talking about is the Unified Budget - which treats the social security surplus (which will be peaking about that time) as if it were free money that could be borrowed and never has to be paid back.

However, you have asked a very good question: Why are they taking SS out of your pay checks if the money is not going to be used to pay benefits? - Its not fair for the wealthy to pay taxes on capital gains and dividends at a 15% rate while lower and middle income workers pay income taxes at a rate of about 28% plus Social Security and Medicare taxes of 15.3% (including the share contributed by the employer.)

By the time you get old enough to benefit from the Soc Sec system, I'm sure it will not be in place (just as u said) BUT, they can't just let people go hungry or not have the rent, heat electric paid. Another kinda thing will have to be in place. I am old enough to receive Soc Sec but it's not enough to live on because I didn't have a good paying job. No college. We didn't think it was necessary when we were young and raising our kids. I get $700 a month and $10 a month in food stamps. When ya get up there in age, it's impossible to afford anything extra. I never thought it would be like this. I commend you for thinking ahead and making sure your finances are in good shape when you can't work anymore. I hate the Welfare and druggies as well. I'd like to know how they can afford all those cigarettes they chain smoke when I pass by the Rath Bldg in downtown Buffalo. Geesh! I can't even let myself buy a pack of gum without thinking if I'll need that .50 cents toward bread at $1.89 a loaf.
I'm done! LOL

Well, you can easily find out how much you paid into social security so far. I think even if it social security doesn't exist one day, they will have to compensate those who paid into it one way or another by paying them or transferring funds to some other type of benefit. If not, this means the U.S government would have stolen from several generations. They wouldn't want millions of 70 yr olds protesting about being stolen from!

On the other hand, I don't plan on depending on social security and plan my own retirement through other means. However, since I paid x amount of dollars into social security, if I live long enough, I should be entitled to the money when the time comes around.

actually if you have not heard, and you probably haven't because most English news stations are not covering this. the Latino community is actually the new baby boomers! kudos! this is great for social security because they are working and contributing to the social security fund. even the illegals that are working here may not be directly contributing by paying social security but they are having babies here, so in 15 yrs when the babies can work they will contribute to social security. it all works out very well mathematically.

Yep, Social Security Trust is gone already. The babyboom from 1940-1960's and their pensions (plus the other dozen ways to collect SS) left us nothing

Welcome to the club.

SS was not intended as a means to retirement or welfare but as a supplement. Americans (specially from that generation) have milked the system completely. They have gotten return for their contribution in just three years and they are collecting for a lot more. It's not their fault, it's the way the system works.

So when we retire (the eco baby boom generation) we won;t have anything. The best way to protect ourselves is geting a private pension (IRA, 401K)

I am drawing ''SS'' i paid it in for about 40 years. why not draw it. I had a ''TRIPLE BYPASS'' the Dr.said no more work. what the hell was i going to do? I don`t blame you for getting mad at the ''welfare or the drug addicts''. but it is not ''SS''fault. Hang in there something will be done. Good luck to you.
