the truth?

How was this theory discovered? (I'm not actually sure if it's considered a theory).
How is it determined that someone is projecting rather than just seeing reality for what it is?

The original concept is very old. It is the basis for such statements as "Judge not, least ye be judged." People tend to see in others what they do not accept in themselves.

Freud seems to be the first to use the term "psychological projection" and so it is often referred to as "Freudian projection". The key to this is the hidden trait in Self that one sees in others.

For example: the person who hides their own aggressive tendencies may then see other people acting in an excessively hostile manner.

In some cases the trait is known to Self, but hidden from others, such as the person who is cheating in a relationship who then believes (or acts as if) that their mate is cheating.

Since Projection is part of the subjective reality of a person, it can seldom be determined by the person doing the projecting. The reality check usually requires the intervention of an outside source.

The most common example is the Projection (assumptions) that take place during acute Romance. The person feels an emotion similar to Love and fills in details about the partner with Projections of their wishes. This tends to continue until outside information (usually from others not involved) overwhelms these false projections and the Romantic partner is seen for who they really are. At this point the Romance rapidly fades.

If you personally want to know if you are projecting and not perceiving reality, investigating your own motives is the best place to start. An honest friend can be of great help. If one is not available (or will not take a chance of putting your friendship on the line), a professional councilor can often help.

Projection is discovered by the person it is being done to and is a word that decribes that act of bottom line *lying* to others about themselves and others...also manipulative. A person could come up with a list of discriptions for *lying* and why candy-coat it when it's bottom line destructive. If a person is a third party assuming the position of leadership and either has no clue or is caught refusing to respond with solution they have no leadership skills and are a fake posturing as peaceful. Therefore, has no choice but to also take responsibility for their actions and cannot control who will end up seeing them in the truth as no different than the one who projects. Especially if they repeatidly spoke the truth and asked for help. There is huge problem with people not accepting relationship roles - those who advertise as help or community leaders - and suspiciously it's bringing in the cash so do the math...it's greed.

When positive is present and a person is trying to destroy that ...help that falsely advertises and therefore, is doing the same thing it is no different than the person choosing to project. A government and or social organizations that is abusing the a person who is being abused without exposure of truth -aka hiding - is ripping people off. There are things in this life that cannot be blamed on the innocent and when a spouse goes in to request help for a bond which is in sickness and in health asking for help is her humbling herself also. The same goes for a married parent who is trying to raise a child with too many people encouraging bad behavior who are also -people- around her or him but why go there again when the future places prisons in neighborhoods.

Dr. Sanity is not consistent in writing. The writer goes in and out of truth...approaches truth and then runs away. I felt like I was on a rollercoaster when reading the points on blaming women who raise boys, who become terrorists of any sort due to an environment of mysogny but it has little to do with men...come on therefore empower women to control and bash men - what? What a cheap shot at a lame excuse blame and thwart the issues...they'll never figure it out...they and us as in PEOPLE. People do not enjoy being toyed with and like it or not that includes our loved ones grasping for a normal life that has been placed out of their reach on purpose.

Questioner: very mature question.

I think that sometimes people can both project and see what's really there. If anything, we often dislike in others what we dislike in ourselves. It reminds me of something a psychology instructor in college once told me. One day early on in a certain semester, he decided conduct a little experiment. He asked each of his students to write down what annoyed them the most about the people sitting next to them. One woman complained that the woman who sat next to her talked too much. Interestingly enough, the instructor said that he never saw the woman who made the complaint shut up once during the entire semester!

Freud described projection as one of the defense mechanisms.

There is no cut-and-dried method for determining whether or not someone is subconsciously utilizing this defense mechanism.
