a. Hale - name of someone (he knew)
b. possibly place name (proper noun)
c. crime/espionage pot-boiler
reasons, "they meant to murder him" and he knew and still dared them, "his manner cynical and nervous" and the atmosphere is enticingly devilish and devilishly enticing, "early summer sun, the cool Whitsun wind off the sea.." Appropriate setting for uncertain enigmatic and expectant, 'Judas kissing Jesus' in an act of betrayal.

good luck
