List of possibilities in order of commonality:

If the vibration is in your steering wheel, it's front end. If it's in your seat, it's back end.

1. Tire/wheel out of balance (Free-->$15/wheel)
2. Bent rim (Balance to find this + ~$100 to fix per rim)
3. Loose parts. (Check the strut hats, and hub to strut bolts.)
4. Tire deteriorating/wearing uneven (New tires?)
5. Tie-rod failing (depending on model ~$30each for E36)
6. Control arm and/or control arm bushing failing (Arm=$150+each, bushing = $50+pair)
7. Play in the steering rack.(varies on labor and parts.)

Alignment generally doesn't contribute to a vibration at normal speeds. Typically alignment has more of an effect on tire wear and high speed tracking, also cornering.

Sounds like an alignment problem my friend. Either this or you need new tyres. This is common is most older vehicles - Not just older BMW's

im assuming you mean that your STEERING wheel is shaking, and not your actual wheel on the road.

in that case you may need an alignment, a tire rotation, or new tires. or all three

what year ,model and mileage of vehicle ? If it is higher mileage any of the many rubber bushings could be worn out.
Or it could be an alignment or uneven tire wear or unbalanced tire .

I agree with Charles R, from my own experience.
Get your tires balanced. Even if it doesn't work, it's relatively cheaper than replacing a slew of other parts.
