I would pay with a check or money order that has your date of payment on it. I wouldn't sweat it though, check your lease- most leases state it isn't considered late unless received after the 5th of the month.

It all depends on the language of the lease.
If you want your receipt dated on the first, you could have a receipt already prepared, couldn't you? Office supply stores have blank receipts.
In fact, you could make your own receipt on your computer.
OR you could get a bank check or money order, proving you paid your rent on the 1st.
I live in a small apartment complex and I prefer using a bank check from my credit union. It doesn't cost me any mnoney. AND I have the receipt already - the bank check's stub.
I learned my lesson the hard way. Someone "stole" my cash rent from the landlord's box and I was accused of not paying the rent. As a matter of fact, he wanted me to continue paying him with cash AND to call him so he could come and get the rent - every month. This is totally unacceptable to me. I chose the bank check method.
I don't want to be inconvenienced waiting for the landlord to come get his money - especially when I have more important things to do with my time.
Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed taking the time to answer it!

Pay with money orders dated the first, this will resolve any future problem. Do you see the landlord when you drop off your rent? Ask for a receipt to be written right then. Ask him why he dates them on the 3rd. Sometimes it can be just that easy. Communication.

Not sure what type of "dispute" you are worried about, if you are paying your rent on the 1st you are like gold to most landlords. So unless you are doing something else that would cause the landlord to want you out, I think this is much ado about nothing.
Likely some states are different, but in IL rent isn't considered late til 5 days after the due date (ie rent due the 1st late on the 6th)

Are you paying by check or money order? If that is the case you don't even need his receipts. If your paying in cash you need to insist on your receipt the same time you hand him cash.

Well your bank should have copies of your checkes that have been cashed. So if he cashes it that same day you paid you will have the proof.
