Don't use liquid softeners in your towels it make them less absorbent and once you start drying on them they smell. Use a cup of white vinegar in the final rinse and a dryers sheet in the dryer.=)

Add 20 Mule Team borax to whatever else you wash your towels in and then, if you use a towel more than once, make sure you hang it where air flows around it, don't let it hang like it's folded in half as the air can't get between the 2 halves of the towel. Even if the towels are colored, you should use at least 1/2 cup of bleach every time you wash them. Make sure you are not over loading the washer when you wash towels, and DON'T use fabric softener, use vinegar instead. If that doesn't help, get new towels and do all the above. If you have a bath with a window, open the window for 1/2 hour after bathing to clear the room of moisture. If no window, get a small fan and point it towards the door to move the moist air out of the room. Good luck.

Do not leave towels in the bathroom, for every shower taken, they absorb the humidity in the room. If, however, these towels are not left in the shower-room, and have this smell, right off of your towel rack, or pantry room, then I suggest that the problem lies in either of these two places, or within the washer itself.
Run the washer through a cycle with nothing but one cup of bleach in the water, then leave the washer lid up when done. Always leave the washing machine lid up when done with the wash.
If it is a pantry, near the bathroom, then in some manner, the humidity from the showers are penetrating, and or seeping into this closet space and causing the mildew.
If there is mildew, there is mold growing somewhere.
Please make sure that there is some sort of caulking around your tub, preventing water from splashing or soaking the walls behind the tub.

Well, make sure you aren't washing too many towels at a time, if you wash too many they don't have room to move around and they don't get fully clean. Wash them on hot also if you aren't already. Another thing you can do is add some vinegar to your wash cycle, it will help clean out the bacteria and it also works as a fabric softener. A good arm and hammer dryer sheet is also good for getting rid of any remaining smell. But the most important of those is making sure you don't put too many towels in at once.

Easy and cheap::> towels in washer, not too many, hot water, laundry soap, and white vinegar, don't be afraid to really dump some in there too. Let sit over night, finish cycle in the morning, extra rinse maybe, dry in dryer with dryer sheats, smile big after next bath or shower.
