Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington was a pianist, composer and bandleader of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, one of the greatest jazz and swing bands ever. He did do solo and group recordings, notably a great LP with John Coltrane. He was not considered as great a pianist as contemporaries Fats Waller or Art Tatum but was excellent on the keys, nontheless. He had an exceptional big band, featuring famous names like Lester Young, Cootie Williams and Ben Webster. His son Mercer was also an outstanding musician.
