Actually this is a question you might ask your Manager. A booking usually goes hand in hand with a contract of sort. That is part of his or her duties. However, you should have some form of written agreement at least a Letter of Understanding between you and the Owners, Promoters / Agents etc. if they are also involved. If your Union use the standard form format. If your Gig's at a Five Star Hotel or similar they will not try to go around you or short you. But if you find yourself in between Promoters/Agents representing them or if this Gig will be long term rather than a "One -niter," use good judgement and protect yourself and your sidemen, seek some legal advise.

Anytime you have a money transaction where the money is paid AFTERWARD, you should have a written agreement. A lawyer is not necessary, but the time shoudl be taken to read over the agreement by both sides before signing. Copies given to both signers too.

Always have something in writing then if there is a problem you can refer back to the paper.
