I was suppose to meet my peers somewhere and I missed the next step without even knowing. They were right under my nose. I just had to cross the street. They waited for me for a long time, I kept searching. And then they left. I feel bad. Why is it that I have poor listening skills or is this some other issue?

I repeated them and myself. Yet, I missed a very important step I missed the opportunity of a life time.

The listening skills require just a focused mind. May be 'we' are busy listening to the ceaseless chatter of our own mind most of those times we miss listening something outside!
If we maintain awareness that we are a listener to our mind, then the grip of our mind would loosen a bit, and our 'listening skills' would improve. If the awareness is not getting geared up, try that breath watching. Initially watching our breath might end up into our interfering into the breath itself. With some practice, we would learn to be just a witness to it, and happily, things would get shaped to our favour. Good luck.

Maybe it's poor listening skills or maybe things just slip your mind by accident. Try not to beat yourself up about it. It's great that you've recognized what's going on. You could try writing more details down, maybe carry a pad and pen with you often. Writing something down actually helps commit it to memory. Or, when someone tells you something, like a phone number or address, repeat the information back to them to confirm you have it right.

You can get tests from your school/university to see if it's bad listening skills or something else... it may be as simple as you have no aptitude for auditory learning... you may be a very visual learner.. or kinesthetic.... or who knows... but those would require you taking other steps to improve your intake ability.

WHAT????

Repeat what was said to make sure you have it right. If you have it right then screw up you may have memory issues, not hearing issues. Have your hearing checked now to make sure it is nothing physical.
