A switch is a device for linking computers within a local area network. All the machines need to be in the same subnet for it to connect them. It has no way of crossing a subnet boundary. A router has intelligence with respect to routing, which is the act of passing traffic from one local area network to another. In normal home use this is used to connect local machines to the internet. They can also connect one subnet to another in a company network.

a switch is basically a name given to a device that will split a internet signal to many different computers. It can range from 4 ports to 15, depending on what kind of switch you need. It will also connect computers to a network so then all are connected together.
A router is a device similar to a switch but is used for internet. You can also have wireless router's which have 4 ports for hard lines but also has the wireless feature on it. The only downside is that the more computers are connected, the more the bandwith continues to fall.

an ethernet switch is basically an expansion for a router. say you have a router but not enough ethernet plugs. then you can buy a switch and expand the number of plugs you have. ethernet switches can also be used if you have one of those modem/router combinations you get from your isp. usually, the modem/router combo only has 1 ethernet plug, in which case people mistakenly think its only a modem and buy a router, only to figure out theres port problems later on.

if you have say 1ethernet port on the router and you have more than one pc, a switch will act like a USB hub. One plug goes from the router to the switch, then all the other ports on the switch have access to internet
