Well.. for "powerful" computer, the name "custom made" sounds familiar.
If you really want a bada$$ computer that is powerful in everything possible, you would have to build it.. that has been the only way I have found to where I can drive computers on the brink to madness without them cracking.
But for shelf items: Compaq and Sony.

Alienware over charges, be careful. You need to compare shop between Gateway, Dell, HP, and Apple. A powerful computer for word processing is different than a powerful computer for video editing. So without specific facts, you wont get many specific answers.

Blue Genie/L from Microsoft is pretty powerful or maybe you are wanting a Cray XT4/XT3 or Cray Red Storm. These are reported to be the top 3 super computers according to Top500.org. If you are looking for more distributed network computing environment, look at Folding@Home or SETI@Home. Another powerful but less legal environment would be the various "zombie" networks PCs by groups of hackers.

no such thing as a "powerful" computer. its powerful hardware. you can take the graphics cards, cpus, and ram out of any computer and replace them with lower end ones and it will be junk.
so to answer your question, id say ALIENWARE or XPS
