You celebrate Columbus Day because his rediscovery of the Americas lead directly to colonisation and the creation of the modern countries and nationalities in North and South America.

However, I'm not too sure how the American aboriginals feel about this opening up of the continents.

batman - Halloween was based on a festival called Samhain that was and is celebrated in Ireland, onhouring the dead. In Catholicism it is referred to as All Saints Day. Americans changed it into a light-hearted festival.

People are so naive and believe anything grammar school spouted out to them. They should read A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn and maybe they would learn than Columbus was a rapist and a murderer that was looking for gold. History has a way of turning villains into heroes especially were the United States is concerned. They try to gloss over the fact that this land was taken forcefully.

This was the Official discovery of the American side of the world. Columbus is vilified now by people who want tear apart anything that is European or Western origin. He was a product of his time and should be remembered and honored as someone who took a chance to do something great.

Absolutely not! The polls are open 12 to 13 hours a day. Are we to shut down all business and lose how many tax dollars and revenues, just because you have an excuse not to make it to the polls. I have been poor, I have been lower, then middle class. I have always been a single parent. I HAVE ALWAYS made it to the polls. That's federal, state, and every local election. Unless you are working 12-13 hours a day, that is an excuse.

Well, they used to think that Colombus discovered America, which now we know he just found an already colonized land (the Indians were here first). I think the gov likes to have a paid holiday. I'm a nurse, and it's not a paid holiday for us!

It just happens to be one of those rare days in the history of the world that you can point to and say that the world was changed forever after that day . You can't say that about the Viking discovery .
