lime green with fine spikes all over and black slits on it (like an underskin) a pink tail/sting , about an inch long

Horn worm, larvae of the sphinx moth. Voracious destroyer of desireable plants. Smooshit. Can exfoliate a healthy plant in a day. Eggs look like tiny yellow crystal balls on underside of leaf.

You don't say where you live. If it's a British Caterpillar, I think it must be a Moth. My book shows only Foreign Moth Caterpillars and they are the only ones I can see that have a 'sting/tail' and unfortunately none of the exact colouring you describe It sounds very pretty though. Good luck in finding the name.

I found a huge brown scaly one in my garden. It turned out to be an Elephant Moth caterpillar. They turn into a beautiful pink moth.
