Without knowing at all where you are; the size of the generator; it's fuel capacity or method; any code issues you might encounter; it could be right against the structure, shielded of course.
In emergencies here in FL; I often fire it up in the garage; leaving VENTING. Obviously that won't ever be reccomended; but certain situations dictate procedures.

Here in florida the big ones that will run the whole hose are "hard wired" into the service panel outside the house..about 2 feet away from the house...A hand start not hard wired in can be anywhere you want....In the garage etc..but the garage should not be used for a period of time due to the carbon monoxide...A hard wired generator should not be away from the house due to like all power equipment..You do not want to run wiring for any long distances..

i might place it a minimum 25 ft away. as a results of fact the winds replace, you will possibly desire to be anxious approximately exhaust intrusion into the domicile by means of domicile windows and doorways (that are no longer likely air tight). the extra suitable distance provides time for the CO to dilute. i may well be extra worried approximately a leaking gas line and fireplace. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that that isn't be an consumer-friendly concern, i do no longer desire to be the only to journey it subsequent to my domicile If i'm no longer on the generator monitoring its operation. I even have a generator which have been given a small speck of airborne dirt and mud contained in the carburetor's needle valve seat. 2 gallons of gas leaked out onto the floor. 2 gallons of gas could make a huge fireplace, in spite of the incontrovertible fact that it won't explode. I boils right down to the threat you desire to take. I even have a hearth extinguisher interior of reach for emergencies. evaluate wiring a distant shutdown swap if this is going to be a semi-everlasting setting up. i exploit mine on celebration and use a heavy extension twine. Works nicely sufficient for me.

Leonard is correct..
If it's a permanent installation the local code comes into play. I've seen some required installs 20 feet from the house.
For a 'temp"portable anywhere outside with good ventilation.
