is it a planet or a meteor?

Neither, but it's closer to a planet. An asteroid is a large chunk of rock and ore, orbiting a sun. It's much smaller than a planet, and never has a signifigant atmoshphere. In contrast, a meteor is mostly ice.

Sizes can vary from smallish boulders to objects best considered as dwarf planets. They are largely rock, but iron and nickel are likely to be found as well. They largely exist in a ring between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, although if memory serves, there is another ring. They seem to be the result of what could have been another planet, but one that never completely formed, probably because of the gravitational influence of Jupiter.
While they exist in large numbers, and some science fiction movies show them in close proximity, this is not the case at all.. Space is vast and even large numbers are lost in such a volume of space. Even so some occasionally collide with each other, or have their orbits changed by nearby passing comets, and thus can be thrown into irregular orbits that could one day impact a planet. If that planet were Earth, bad things could happen.

Asteroids are large lumps of rock usualy in orbit round a star, they are not necessarily spherical. The majority are found between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter although a few are found nearer other planets. Some of Jupiter's moons are thought to be captured asteroids. The largest asteroid is Ceres and this how now been designated a dwarf planet

An asteroid is basically a rock in space smaller than a planet but bigger than a meteoroid.

Technically, a meteor is only the flash of light you see in the sky when a meteoroid enters Earth's atmosphere, but if you want to think of meteors and meteoroids as the same thing I won't quibble.
