Good question! For me and my b/ff it is the phone and loving emails. Comfort and encouragement do not have to have physical contact. That would be preferred but it is not necessary.

As long as you are alive and physically well, nothing can stop you from being with him ;her; them or whatever. There is an old saying which is as true today, as it was two thousand years ago." There are many roads, and they all lead to Rome". The Great Spirit which some call God, cannot be with me physically, but He is with me in my heart, when I see a new born child, when I am lost and drowning in sorrow; ;when I am lonely and in need of a friend; when I am overwhelmed by a magnificent Sunset;when I see a Butterfly and when someone takes the time to touch my soul. Nothing is impossible if we really want to put words into action.

There are so many different ways to be with someone now a days when it's physically impossible (believe me, I've done extensive research on the subject for 3 years now, lol). You can communicate with them & be there for them on the phone, email, & texting. You can be there for someone just by letting someone know that whatever they are going through or feeling at the moment they are not alone & that they are loved.... through the distance.

Thanks for asking this question. I'm doing that very thing now!! I just offer support and kindness. That's two things that a great many others are very short of. Seeing someone make a gesture of hope and love? Gives them energy and motivation to keep on Truckin'!! You'd be surprised at what few words, it can take.To make someone willing to turn their life around. Good Question

Just by communicating whether it be over the phone, Internet, or mail it just shows you care and they have some one on there side it really helps a lot. And prayer also helps.

It's not easy, talk to them one the phone and just make sure they know you are there for them. Send them one of those cute little e-cards. Those are always fun.

* When you can't be there to give physical support your heart can still make the connection! Prayers always work!
This poem sums it up nicely!
I will be there.......
" If one day you feel like crying...
Call me.
I don't promise that I will make you laugh,
But I can cry with you!
If one day you want to run away
Don't be afraid to call me
I don't promise to ask you to stop
But I will run with you
If one day you don't want to listen to anyone...
Call me.
I promise to be there for you.
And I promise to be very quiet.
And if one day you call
and there is no answer
come Fast! to see me
Perhaps I need you!"

I'm struggling with that right now honey. Sometimes you just have to move that mountain or whatever the obstacle is and just be there - that's what I think.
