i holiday often in luxor and i have seen many people swimming in the Nile both tourists and locals. BUT i have to say that while i have paddled in the shallows i would never drink the water or even put it on my face, due to polluton. It is certainly not the cleanest. There is also the risk of some parasites in the still areas of water. But most importantly the currents in the Nile are unpredictable and very strong. on one recent occasion a local teenager drowned there after diving in. and my friend who works on the Nile tells me it is not uncommon. be very careful the Nile is very deep and can be a dangerous river.

It really depends on where in the nile, but in general No, you should not swim.

The water is at its cleanest and purest form right before the Aswan Hight dam, after that it gets polluted by the people who throw things in it, by some factories that dump their waste in etc. The Nile river water becomes contaminated with hundreds of chemicals coming from various sources of waste, which means that swimming may cause skin, eye infections etc, drinking is also not advisable in that form, water is purified first before being pumped into water pipes for everyday use.
