If you go on holidays or out for the evening, the pattern of light in your house should be the same as always, or as near as you can get it.
If you never light the outdoor lights when at home, having them on when nobody is outside will tell the thieves that the house stands empty, but on the other hand, if you mostly have them on a couple of hours at night, keeping them of will be suspicious too.

Same for the general lightning in your house.
If you can switch it on in a natural pattern, and the normal lights, it will look more like someone is home.
But some people will switch on only one little light, and always that one, that does scream "House is empty!"

You can get timers that will switch on at around the same time, or when the level of light gets low, and you can switch it of at a set time too.

Much easier for the people next door too.
