Yes, you can. I did it with my laptop(Vista) and desktop (XP). But on my desktop I couldn't see the laptop. I am not very knowledgable in networking, so I downloaded Network Magic and haven't had any problems since.

You will need a router, wireless preferably, and card(s) for both pcs (check to see if you already have network cards). If you go cheap wireless you are looking at about $100.00. You can hard wire (connect directly to wireless router) one pc and just have to buy 1 card.

Below are links to wireless routers, and windows networking help. Also, the link to a free download of Network magic. Try it if you have problems setting up a network using network feature in Windows.

Good luck.

Yes. Also Windows 2000 and Windows ME and Windows 98 SE. They all use the exact same protocol (TCP/IP) for their networking.

I have always found it best to set the network up first on the "latest" version of Windows (in your case Vista) and then add the earlies PCs in from newest to olds version (XP, 2000, ME, 98SE). Seems I have less throuble when I follow that order.

Yes - both Vista and XP can be on the same network.

I am running both in my corporate environment.
