I have a 2004 Mazda 6. It is a great car, wonderful to drive. But it does have a problem that is something of a mystery. Every so often, upon startup, the engine will rev all on it's own for about 20 seconds and then it levels out and is good to go. The needle goes up to the 2 on the RPM scale, then back down to the 1/2 mark, up down, up down, up down, then levels out. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

We've had regular maintenance performed on the car the whole time we've had it. It has a brand new air filter and battery. As I said, the car is great, and is a joy to drive. I commute to work 60+ miles round trip each weekday. This problem has only been occurring in the last 6 months or so.

Hi, my best friend's wife drives a '05 Mazda 6. She was having similar issues with hers. At first, it would occasionally go up and down RPMs when she first started it, and after a few seconds it would stabilize. After that had happened for a little while, maybe a month, it started a new problem. It would rev up really high to like 6000 RPM when first started, then die and wouldn't start again for a couple minutes. Then it would start fine and have no problems. That was happening about every week or so.

They took it into the dealership, who tried replacing lots of things, such as the Throttle Positioning Sensor, the Fuel Solenoid, Throttle Body, O2 sensors, etc. Eventually, it was determined that the Fuel Pressure Regulator was the issue. So, that may be the problem.

It is searching for a proper fuel mixture (14 : 1 ) it may be because the heated 02 sensor is failing, it may also be due to pirate air entering the intake system (unmetered air ) this would not allow for proper compensation of the fuel ratio... have your intake boot ( bellows ) checked for cracks, and vacuum hoses also.... good luck

I believe chuck t is right, a engine will rev high for a second or two then will go down and stay there.

My Chevy does that too....I'm just too lazy to replace the spark plugs. They're a real bugger to get to.
And it needs a good tuneup.

You've been driving it almost four years, have you ever had a tuneup done on it?

I believe those have an Idle air solenoid that may be bad.
