Before this weekend, I heard a voter say 1-4 was pretty well set, but that teams 5-25 could be in any sort of order.
So, the answer to the question, #3 is a default by virtue of other teams losses.

They're not 'barely' beating anyone. You must be confusing them with LSU, Boston College and South Florida.
There's no '# 3 by default.' They're #3 because they are one of the best teams in the country and undefeated. The greatest travesty in the rankings this week is USC still being in the top 10.
If the rankings were 'fair,' they'd be #1 right now because they finished last season #2 and Florida lost.

Clearly just by other teams losing. I think most Ohio State fans are secretly hoping they lose along the way because if they make it to the Championship game against LSU, it will make last years game look like a nail-biter.

I'd say by default. I'm a Wisconsin fan, and, they were number 5 by default. They've been winning, but, not impressively. They got their butts kicked by a decent Illinois team and dropped to #19. Good luck Buckeyes, just don't lose!

Default. They have the easiest schedule. They are barely beating lousy teams. It would be a shame if they win out and back into the title game.
