I use parrafin wax. I dip fine steel wool in melted wax let cool so i don't get burned. The steel wool smooths out smal nick and splinter, wax seals the wood. Also willl give a better grip.

Any type of oil will do. Mineral oil will soak in the fastest. Motor oils will darken the wood and take longer to soak in. I have used both and they work equally well.

Vegetable able oil is safe and non toxic.I have used it for years.
