oh i so detest having my ankles chopped by a trolley followed by a ''sorry'' - I only say its ok once i have grabbed hold of the culprit and pinned them to the deli counter by their collar and made sure that i have had a sincere apology - whilst my imaginary Pug gnarls at their feet- then i let go of m' husband and proceed to tick items off my list - keeping a rovving eye open for any sightings of Cm-corphwar - !

Well sometimes it's ok and its nice if they apologise. It's not really the end of the world if someone bumps into you and then says sorry. If they've deliberately done it and hurt you that's different but I personally wouldn't want to live my life getting into fights with people just cos they've been a bit clumsy.

Because on the whole people are decent and polite. Its only a tiny minority that will stab or shoot you if you look at them the wrong way or bump into them or wont hand over your mobile phone and thank heavens we aren't all like that. I'd rather someone said that's ok the the sad alternative these days, wouldn't you?

Wow, you really need to visit places of huge populations.. I live in Tokyo, People bump into one another all the time Assulting people never helps. If a person says they're sorry & If you say it's ok. Then that's just common courtesy.

Umm, I'm just a bit confused because you say that we say "that's okay" yet then you pose an experiment and indicate that we will probably not get a "that's okay" from them.
I know that most of the time if someone accidentally bumps into me and I know they meant no harm, then if they apologize I will say "that's okay, no harm done". If I think they purposely ran into me then I will not say that and will say whatever I think is an appropriate response to the situation..
Accidents happen and it really is "okay".

It's called politeness. They say "sorry", we say "that's OK" - neither expression actually means anything. It's a way of coping with living in society - attacking the other person with an axe might be more satisfying, but it makes such a mess of the fruit and veg aisle.

I do that,I always say "no worries mate"then spout loads of profanity's under my breath.I reckon I do this because when a stranger bumps into you and you look up they always look totally panic stricken and embarrassed which leads me to think that it was an accident.

I think just to be nice. I am a very friendly person, even if I don't know someone. I always think that might be the person that will help me out one day when they see I am having trouble with e.g my car and then they'll remember how nice I was to them.

Because we know that at some point we're going to bump into someone and we want them to say "that's ok" to us. Karma, or something.
