in the t20 match between India and Pakisthan a pakisthani player was not given out by the umpire since it was a wide ball even though it was caught behind the wicket but in the ongoing ODI series between India and Australia symonds was given out by the umpire when he was stumped even though it was a wide ball......how does this actually work??

As per Law 25 concerning "Wide" a batsman will be given out in the following cases only:
1)Handled the ball,
2) (Hit wicket),
3) Obstructing the field
4)Run out
5)Stumped
Hence Symonds was given out against wide ball.
Please check the following link for details about Law 25.

The T20 decision was a not-out as the Umpire did not believe that the batsman had snicked the ball. And hence he was not out. If there was any sort of touch, then it could not have been called a wide ball. Sometimes players appeal aggressively on a wide ball so that at least the umpire will not call it a wide. Did not work that time.
Also, theoretically, along with the types of outs given by some other answers, even obstructing the field is a way of getting out on a wide ball. (Wide-Running for a bye-Throw-Batsman stops the throw deliberately)

if he is caught, stumped or run out then he is certainely out. in the 20-20 match probably, the ball hit the glove or maybe it was a wrong decision by the umpire.
